The annual drama happened, as usual, today.
Today when the Sreekovil (sanctum sanctorum)opened after 'deeparadhana', At the distant eastern hilly horizon , the light of 'jyothi' appeared to the immense satisfaction of the thousands of devotees who have thronged to the temple to pay obeisance to the Lord. This marks the grand finale of the two-month period of the Sabarimala pilgrimage.
They went home happily after the Makarajyothi/makaravilakku darshan.
I seriously believe most of them, deep in their minds, know that the whole thing is a show arranged by the Travancore Devaswom Board with a silent nod from the Government.
Days before makarajyothi, The Kerala Police/ Forest Guards cordon the adjacent hill of sabarimala. On the auspicious day, they climb up the hill and make the settings ready for "the annual makarajyothi show". They keep ready a huge pile of camphor, wet blankets etc. When the sreekovil is opened, they light the pile. Earlier, the time of opening the sreekovil and the lighting of the fire was synchronized by the AIR live commentary. Now with mobile phones, it should be much easier. The priest gives a missed call to the police, and they light the pile. Whoa ! The mysterious Makarajyothi appears! For anyone who is looking from sabarimala, it looks like a distant star in the sky. The police cover the fire with wet blankets, intermittently, to give the blinking effect!
Why is the Travancore Devaswom Board doing this?
Simple. Sabarimala is a duck that lays golden eggs. It brings in the money for running other temples of lesser gods - they dont have the celebrity status of Ayyappan. They live below poverty line, cant earn enough collection to change a light bulb.
Why does the Government of Kerala support this ?
Even when the communists where in power, they supported this. Sabarimala is a place where thousands of people visit. Even from other states. The economy of the Pathanamtitta district depends heavily on Sabarimala. ( It is from the other states the money comes. Mallus believe in Free and Open Gods.)
Why does people believe this hoax ?1) They don’t know that it’s a hoax.
2) They know it’s a hoax, but still wants to believe it. They are happy living in a world where still miracles happen.
I have been to Sabarimala n number of times. First, when I went, I didn’t have any idea of gods or miracles, I was a kid. Later, even when I knew the whole thing is hoax, I climbed the Sabarimala, not because I believe in gods or to witness the miracle, simply because by then I was the person who had been to the temple most number of times, thereby making me the leader(guruswamy) of the team. All the other guys (my friends, who otherwise kick my ass) had to touch my feet and get my blessings before they did anything. That was fun! You know, people lining up to get your blessings.. For a moment you get to know how god feels when people ask for blessings !
Being an atheist is good, while others wake up in the morning, take bath and go to the temple, you can comfortably sleep under your blanket.

I do believe Makaravilaku is strange & always felt that its not real.The only thing I hate about today's system is Temples have become commericial.They dont look like prayer places anymore.

I am an ardent devotee of Lord Ayyappa and i believe he comes in the form of "Makarajyothi" every year...
It is noticable that 3 stars become clearly visible, close to each other representing Lord Shiva, Lord Maha- Vishnu and Lord Brahma...
Krishna's Eagle flutters its wings and flies around the sky visible to the human eye at the same time, before the makarajyothi...

Makarajyothi has been visible for more than 150 years and do you think will there be such a hoax going on for more than a generation without the knowledge of the public.The police department also forms a part of public, not only do they work for the government/Devasom board, they also work for themselves... Wont such a matter if hoax spread worse than the forest fire???
So the claim of mobile phones and previously used tools as mentioned may be neglected or ruled out, taking into consideration the ignorance of the person who writes that the makarajyothi is a hoax!

Just yesterday i thought about this..I was searching for the 'real fact' behind,the Jyothi,and i came across ur blog.I see a number of comments to ur blog supporting the idea that it isnt a hoax. Yesterday,i talked to my grandpa about this,and suprisingly,he told me that the Govt,police and the devaswam is cheating the millions.He personally knows an uncle(police) who was once a part of the team that took the camphor and other things to deep inside the forest to play this great drama.
I myself,believe in God and Ayyappan,but still i dont know wht people do such things to fool people

i have heard a lot about the same issue,but had my own doubts about it .it s a sad thing that the beliefs on innocent people are being used in such manner.but my doubt is why cant a solid evidence be brought about to prove the point to thousands who are being misled..,why cant the media interfere,wats really wrong in helping the innocent people..?is politics playing a part here also

Read all the comments above. Be it a hoax or not a hoax. But it never sends awrong message unlike some other religious congressions. Infact it re inforces the man's faith in the almighty. Those people who witness this jyothi, in a background filled with the saranam vili from crores of people at same time, feel their body and mind fully purified.
Ultimately, why dont we believe that it isn't a hoax.
Easy target, isnt it? To go after millions of devotees minding their business and trying to get some peace and happiness in their lives. Could not find anything more useful to do with your free time? The one who explained "Makajyothi" as a 'Drama" is simply a stupid. He doesn't belive in God. He means to say that the 'Makara Nakshatram' & 'Krishnaparunthu' are also managed by some celestial drama artists. Let's forgive this mad man.

cool man.. its nice to see someone who thinks a lot like me.. i ve always firmly believed that this is a hoax. i had read about this in a magazine. There was an article by one of the members of the kerala yukthivadi sangam. Makaravilakku is strange coz every year more and more people seem to be drawn to sabarimala even when it can be clearly understood by a person with minimum common sense that this is not real.

I think it is the responsliblity of each of us belivers to save our fellow belivers if possible
If you have ever been to sabarimala you might have seen the word written right on top of the sreekovil
It reads "Thathwamasi".meaning "it is you only". This is the only temple i know in which
the devotee is also called by the name of lord himself.
Going to sabarimala is not about seeing the miracles
it is about learning to see a god in your fellow devotees and thereafter every other living thing in the world
If one doesnt try to learn that I think no point in going to that wonderfull place

when ever there is a crowd, and food scattered around there will be eagles ( and crows ) in the sky and rats on earth. That neither makes the event, eagles or the rats special. Ever looked up when there is a sports meet or something like that ?

Even if Makar Jyothi is hoax, and ayyappan is a non entity for you, then why the heck did you go to sabarimala continuously for 18 years (Ithink that is the eligibility criterion to become a Guru swamy). Yeah.. i can think of one reason, you must have been searching for the truth behind makara jyothi... Where is God? Where is God? Somebody's (especially youth) curious enquiry .How it can be explained The only answer is that "God is everywhere means in living and nonliving things yet localized, all-pervading yet aloof. He walks yet doesn't walk. He is far away yet very near as well. also like taste of water , ligt of sun " Such contradictory statements are not whimsical. Rather, they indicate God's inconceivable power.We can only feel and enjoy.
The Absolute Truth, God in all religions Christ, Krishna or Allah, can be realized in three phases: Brahman, Paramatma and Bhagavan. These aspects of the Absolute Truth are comparable to the sunshine (Brahman), the sun's surface (Paramatma) and the sun planet (Bhagavan);three different features of the same reality.
The Brahman aspect of God is the beginningless, impersonal form of the Lord, the effulgence of God's transcendental body. Just as the root of a tree maintains the whole tree, God, the root of all things, maintains everything by His energies: He is the heat in fire, the taste of water, the light of the sun ;the underline principle or foundatio of everything. Although Krshna spread Himself throughout His creation, He retained His own personality. "Unintelligent men, who do not know Me perfectly, think that I was impersonal before and have now assumed this personality," God explains in Bhagavad-gita. "Due to their small knowledge, they do not know My higher nature, which is imperishable and supreme" (Bg. 7.24). Although impersonalists may eventually achieve the Lord, their path is fraught with difficulties, for it is unnatural for the embodied soul to conceive of the unembodied, which is only a partial aspect of the Absolute Truth.
Realization of God as "Paramatma," the Supersoul in the heart of every embodied soul, is compared to knowing the sun disc in the sky. The Paramatma is the supreme proprietor, witness and permitter, and He accompanies the wandering soul through its 8,400,000 embodiments. Acting as the soul's friend, He remains the soul's constant companion during his sojourn in the material world, no matter what type of body the soul inhabits;in pig, mosquito, philosopher, demigod. The Supersoul helps him fulfill his desires by supplying knowledge, remembrance, and forgetfulness.
Although the Supersoul appears to be divided among all beings, He is never divided. Rather, He is situated as one and all;like the sun reflected in millions of buckets of water. Paramatma can be perceived through total surrender, meditation, cultivation of knowledge, working without fruitive desires and finally devotion. A person in full knowledge of Paramatma understands that the Supersoul is the localized aspect of the Supreme Personality of Godhead within this material world and that the next step is to worship Him as Bhagavan.
The word "Bhagavan" refers to one who possesses in full all opulences that we possess in minute degree: riches, strength, fame, beauty, knowledge and renunciation. Although everyone can claim some degree of these opulences, only the Supreme Personality of Godhead can claim them all absolutely.
"Although I am unborn and My transcendental body never deteriorates," Krshna tells Arjuna in the Bhagavad-gita (4.6), "I still appear in every millennium in My original transcendental form." Krshna appears in this world "to deliver the pious, annihilate the miscreants, and to reestablish the principles of religion" (Bg. 4.8). He does not change His body when He appears, like a common living entity, who appears in body after another. Rather, He appears in His original eternal form, with two hands, holding a flute. Still, it appears that He takes birth like an ordinary child and grows to boyhood and youth. But He never ages beyond youth. At the time of the Battle of Kuruksetra, He was more than one hundred years old by material calculations, but He looked like a young man. He is the oldest person, but neither His body nor His intelligence ever deteriorates or changes.
"One can understand me as I am, as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, only by devotional service. And when, by such devotion, one is fully conscious of Me, one can enter the kingdom of God" (Bg. 18.55).
The Vedic scriptures declare that Bhagavan Sri Krshna is the source of both the Supersoul and Brahman and the origin of all avataras. Avataras are scheduled incarnations who descend from the spiritual world to execute the Lord's mission of protecting the devotees and annihilating the miscreants. Their descent is foretold in the scriptures so that unscrupulous persons can be checked from claiming to be avataras. .
A common misconception of uninformed students of the Bhagavad-gita is that Krsna's universal form (described in the Eleventh Chapter) is the last word in God realization. The universal form is most impressive and spectacular: "If hundreds of thousands of suns were to rise at once into the sky, their radiance might resemble the effulgence of the Supreme Person in that universal form. Arjuna could see in the universal form of the Lord the unlimited expansions of the universe situated in one place although divided into many, many thousands" (Bg. 11.13). The universal form frightened Arjuna and boggled his mind, especially the kala-rupa, the form of time that was devouring and chewing up all the combatants on the battlefield of Kuruksetra. Arjuna therefore requested Krshna to withdraw His terrifying universal form and show him His four-armed Visnu form. Krshna agreed. Then, reverting back to the two-armed form that Arjuna was accustomed to see, the Lord declared, "This form of Mine you are now seeing is very difficult to behold. It cannot be understood simply by studying the Vedas, nor by undergoing serious penances, nor by charity, nor by worship. Only by undivided devotional service can I be understood as I am, standing before you, and can thus been seen directly" (Bg. 11.53-4).
The kingdom of God is called we say heaven, the place without anxiety, and it lies far beyond this world of matter. It is eternal, and every single one of its atoms is fully conscious and blissful. Shaped like a lotus flower whose petals are the countless spiritual planets where the God in the form of Chist, Krishna or Allah reside.

One answer I can give you is that the proof or foundation of the presence of Lord Krishna, Buddha, Jesus, etc., are all very similar. There are books or legends, and also landmarks where various activities have taken place. But if you should ever travel to the holy places of India, you will find numerous areas where the historical legends have taken place, or even where physical evidence remains that shows the reality of the historical accounts, especially of the past activities of Sri Krishna, or Buddha, Shiva, and others. The more you travel in India, the more you will see this sort of evidence and the basis of the traditions that people continue to hold.
I am presently working on a book that will help show the basis of these traditions and evidence that can be found in the numerous holy places of India, based on my own travels to most of these places.

The famous Indian Philosopher J.Krishnamoorti once said "both god-believer's and atheists are superstitious for both have closed their search for reality and started blindly believing in 'god' or 'no god'.
As human race, always has a tendency to believe in 'conspiracy theories', 'hoax theories', it is very tough to prove other wise. How many have times have we heard of great hoaxes, fantastic tittilating cover up...FROM Jesus married mary magdalene, to "Man never went to moon, it was only a studio" to Area 51 where Flying Saucers or Extra Terrestrials (also remember alien abduction), living beings from other planets live...
Anyway dear Sir..I usually dont comment to these things. but because you appear sensible, i really want to convey the other side of your story. By the way I am Rahul Easwar, Grandson of the Supreme Priest (Tantri, the person who gives missed calls (allegedly).
I would request you to ponder three points and i will myself give the counter points to them.
Point no 1.
Makara Jyothi has been going on for centuries. There have been reference to this kind of celestial light in southern India in Buddhist Scriptures (u can refer internet) and some travellers memoirs who came to india centuries ago.

May be these lights were lit by tribals of that age as a part of their festival or was a secret cover up for sabarimala even from that point of time.
Point 2
It is only a misconception that Swamy Ayyappan founded Sabarimala. It was a Sastha temple, milleniums old supposedly founded by Parasurama. And makara jyothi was supposedly the heavenly light given by Indra and Narada when Bhagavan Parasurama did the Pratishta. Later according to many historians, when Buddhism swept Kerala, it changed into a Buddhist Vihara. Then also many historians and travellers give clues about some kind of miracle there.

Sadly NDTV's report and Kaumudi's report was biased. As you might have seen it, it never include our views. It was a one sided story. They asked Minister, but who is he to answer. He is here for hardly 5 years..but my family was there for the past 1000 years. I have talked to NDTV's reporters and they have told they will convey the other side next year. And about Gopakumar sir, i have called him some days back and we will be meeting.

I have talked to almost all the people who "claimed" they were behind this miracle. And I have met atleast 5-6 people who claimed to have lit the lamp in a given same year. If police is stopping them, why cant they shoot it and show. why can they do the 'live' of police stopping them in this age of high technical advance.

What about the honourable seats of Justice, High courts and Supreme Court, Did they also close their eyes to Sabarimala and Makara jyothi?
By the way India was also ruled by Britishers who really wanted to eradicate other religious beliefs through their missionary work. What happend to them. Did they and their police, army also did this for Sabarimala.

As far as I know, I dont know the mystery behind Makra jyothi and Eagle roaming around tiruvabharanam. You can clarify with Kerala Yukthivadi Sangham, I have personally went there and discussed this issue in detail with them. I have also gone to Tantris, Swamis and other religious people in search of the answer to a question my logic cannot answer. It is so funny that a non believer "Guruswamy" researches something without going into the root of the topic he writes on.Hinduism has always been passive about its history and has never compelled its believers to learn or preach its morals.Sad to say , we see a lot of foreigners researching and following the very principles of Hinduism whereas the very same Hindus find fault with its principles without any research.In a land with rich culture it is time that each individual learn the richness of the Hindu culture and learn the process of being a Hindu.By doing that he will definitely learn to justify any action he is preparing to do.Ayyappan ,Makaravilakku,Krishnaparanthu and the blessed Sabarimala has been always there and no amount of scams can take away the trust that the devoted Indians have.If there was any hoax in it,there are a lot of electronic applications that would have revealed the hoax.We know that no one is free from the satellites hovering in the sky and we also know that any mischief being done on the earth can be detected by these satellites.

hi mdemon .... it could be true that the makarajyothi is a hoax and also that it is supported by the government as it generates lot of money... but i think the point that we should think about is that who is harmed by such a thing.... you yourself mentioned that many people come to the temple despite knowing that it is a hoax.... am sure they come because they feel good.... and is it wrong to do something that one feels good about .... i understand that it could be a hoax( although nothing is conclusively : and the indian telivision media are the last people that i would beleive).... i fail to understand what is the point that you are rying to drive home.... if people know it is a hoax and still want to go to see it, why should others have a problem.... one more thing : i beleive( as also stated in one of the posts above) that the penance(or whatever you may wish to call it) that is observd for around 40 days where all devotees going for the pilgrimage address each other as "GOD" irrespective of social or economic status is something that teaches an induvidual to always repect another induvidual.... i find it difficult to understand that you, who have been doing it for so many years fail to appreciate it...... looking forward to a reply

1981 – Mr. Karunakaran Nair of KSEB (Kerala State Electricity Board) along with the help of his driver Gopinathan Nair set up an 'artificial' jyothi by lighting 2Kgs of camphor.
1986 – Officials of Devaswom Board set up an artificial Jyothi with the protection of the Kerala Police.
The correspondent of NDTV showed a concrete platform like structure from where the artificial light was allegedly set up by the 'state'. He also said that the setting up of the 'Jyothi' is an open secret, but the devotees are not bothered.
DISCUSSION:
Mr. G.Sudhagaran:- The 'Makara Jyothi' cannot be termed as a State's set up. The government has never involved in such things. The government respects the 'faith' of all religions and all religions have many such faiths, which should not be questioned or debated, as it will hurt their religious sentiments.
Mr. Anantharaman, Guruswamy:- As devotees of Swami Aiyappa, we believe in Makara Jyothi and that is why millions of devotees are thronging the Sabarimala every year. We have steadfast faith in Lord.Aiyappa, which should not be debated.
Mr. Rajan Gurukkal:- Such a farce has resulted in many stampedes and unfortunate deaths. It is condemnable that the government itself is involved in such set ups.
The channel showed the result of the SMS poll as 100% for state's set up and 0% for miracle, along with support comments from only three viewers, just for a few seconds and withdrew the figures & comments. Suddenly the anchor thanked the panelists and closed the program and shifted to sports news. The whole program lasted only for 5 to 6 minutes, while normally such 'verdict' debates are conducted for 30 to 40 minutes.
What happened behind the scenes? Why the program was abruptly closed?
The answer is left to our guessing.
RESULT:- The embarrassed Anchor Nidi Razdan cut a sorry figure and NDTV hung its head in shame.

I too am of the thought that this is a hoax !!!! In fact, after watching a couple of videos on youtube, i made up my mind to find the real thing on my own..... I am not an atheist, but i do challenge such miracles in today's world !!! I have my deep rooted belief in god and his powers, but human -created shows like the 'Makara-Jyothi' have been around for a long time misusing innocent people's beliefs for commercial purposes. I am a devotee of Swami Ayyappan. The Supreme power incarnates from time to time to the earth to re-establish dharma (as per Bhagavad Gita - The Song of the God). In the Kaliyuga (present) people are living in the material world and we are materialistic. Even if God is infront of us we will not realize. There is a purpose for each Avatar (incarnation). Whether we believe or not, in each Avatar, the Supreme Lord accomplishes the purpose and returns. Where, during such period of temporary stay, few luckiest people realize the Supreme power, believe him, love him and get the chance to experience the devine love and care. While the ignorant will say those people are mad, while they do not realize the feeling and blessing of experiencing the devine love.

Were we be able to witness any mysteries, or can we tell anything that we have witnessed till now, can we think of a new temple and diety as a result of our experiences? Swami Ayyappan lived in the Pandalam temple and returned after accomplishing his assignment. Before leaving, he told The King once in a year (on Makarajyothi day) he will give darshan to his devotees the Real Darshan as Jyothi... I do belive that.

after some years they stop their festival celebration. that year nobody saw makarajyothy and Devotees from other state believed that god ayyapa not stay in sabarimala .this inversely affect the number of devotees visit sabarimala and EARNING from other state.so deveswom board played the dirty game by lightning the camphor to foolish the devotees mainly to increase their earning by attracting the devoties

It pains to read this mail though it is well known fact amongst the pilgrims that Makara Jyothi and Makara Vilakku are two different items.
I have visited Sabari Malai from 1967 onwards regularly for the Jyothi day and our group has seen it without fail every year so also many devotees. Due to advanced age I stopped visiting Malai for some years now though our group still goes regularly and comes back narrating how they saw the jyothi and how the clamour was amongst the pilgrims. In fact, I took my wife also during my last 5-6 trips when I could not go via the long route but visited by Pampa temple.
I faintly recollect that during Indira Gandhi's time she arranged with IAF to locate the source of the Vilakku but failed to arrive at a result! Then, she even visited the temple by a helicopter for which a special helipad was constructed near Sabari Peetam.
Let us not believe this CPI/CPM GOVT. AS ALSO THE CONGRESS for these people will stoop down to any level for VOTE BANKS!

I know all people talk about Makara Jyothi and want to make a statement in Blog sites that they know the reality,which may be or may not be.Its speculation,no one is ever met the person,who saw the camphor being lit or who was trying to perform Jyothi.I dont disagree,neither I agree.There should be an evidence,its been so many years,that people throng to experience divine Jyothi,there is always a probability of getting to know the truth.The priest who agreed that it was artificial is also only in Blog sites,no one has ever seen the interview in papers or tv.Me being a doctor,educated,blah blah but I believe in Lord Ayyappa,I would not agree neither disagree with Jyothi,I would just wait for an evidence,till then,I am happy believing its divine Jyothi and I dont think its going to harm me or the nation.I dont think so,civil swami,should also crib about it.Its a good thing,swami,with all their mind,body and soul devote to lord for 41 days,its tougher than any other religious practice.It helping the person who is doing it in everyway,why to disturb a belief which is doing good and spreading the message of brotherhood.I am happy being a sincere devotee of Lord Ayyappa,I would encourage others also to experience the joy of this spiritual experience.You will not know,till you don’t do it.You only live once and this is the time.

It is a social phenomenon and helping society by uniting people by bringing them together with faith. There is nothing wrong even if Jyothi itself is lit by temple staff which symbolizes opeing of temple gates for dharsan. Funny how the blogger himself has little idea of what it is. It is true that lot of people confuse things between jyothi & vilakku. Vilakku is fire lit by people on the hill. Jyothi is the star that appears at the sametime with the krishna parunthu. As per aithihyam there was a temple in that hillock and the auspicious moment was celebrated there as well by lighting the file. Now govt does it!. i disagree with u because if we think that the shabarimalai devasthanam and kerala state govt. doing such things. they r doing just for preserving the beliefs of lakhs of pilgrims who visit the holy temple after there 40 days of severe deeksha and also for preserving hindu dharma. I suggest u that by such sentences of urs theres no profit for u but many gets mentally disapointment who believes strongly in such things.

You can call me an agnostic. I have visited the shrine twice and did get a feeling of confidence and fresh energy.
But since a child i was always baffled by the makaravillaku theory(or practical for some.)I wondered if the torch if at all real ;happened at the top of a hill which could be ventured and studied easily. If people can reach and explore the moon, conquer the everest why not a hill one tenth its size. I fail to understand if it is divine or a natural phenomena then why is the place prohibited??

Hello Mr.Curious ...first of all i dont want to criticize this blankly as its quite natural that we will be curious to look into this....but before posting theese type of sensitive articles ..try to do a research on this..well what i heard is the actual Makara jyothi is different -which is a star that comes up in the sky at the time of deeparadhana...why u are not telling about the appearance of this star ?
i have an argument, if so said makarajyoti is a celestial object what will be the distance of that 'jyoti' from earth? by simple logic celestial objects means very distant. That means like all other celestial objects every one in that hemisphere of earth will be able to see that;not only in sabarimala and associated places.
Now, there is simple trigonometric or parallaxial ways to measure distance to the 'jyoti' from viewer. With the photograph of the 'jyoti' and distance calculated, one can easily judge where the jyoti was taken place and was it fake or not..
..I STRONGLY BELIEVE THE DISTANCE WOULD BE ONLY FEW KILOMETRES..
IF ANY BODY WANT TO DO SPECTROSCOPIC ANALYSIS OF JYOTI DO IT, THEN WE CAN IDENTIFY WHICH COMPOUND HAS BURNT TO PRODUCE JYOTI...HA HA HA

After adopting a 41 days of 'Vrudha' (ideally speaking), after controlling your 5 different senses for 41 days, after traveling a long, climbing the toughest mountain and the reaching the 18 divine steps,climbing it, you are reading a line at the top" Tatvamasi"! Meaning That is you! It is conveying a great message to you, This is the way one have to live his life! This pilgrimage unveiles our true identity!The equality among all of us!The ultimate btruth of humanity! It conveys that We are all one and the same, you,me and so called 'god' living and non living things everything are one and the same!That means our origin is one and the same,the same point ! Why don't you people enjoy the truths of humanity and nature conveyed by these spiritual places rather than questioning its miracles and beliefs of millions?! See I'm a former atheist (not now) but In realised at one point if time that aethism and science cannot answer all the questions and mysteries of our nature and even our own existence! Do you know about Spooky action at a distance? Quantum Entanglement? Or anything about Quantum mechanics?
